Dozens Killed in Ukrainian Fire Caused by Violent Clashes

The Fire Quickly Spread, Trapping Anyone in the Building

At least 31 people have died in a fire in Odessa, in southwest Ukraine.  The fire broke out in the Trade Unions House.  The cause is still unknown, but both pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian protesters were throwing explosives.  The deaths came from people trapped in the building, who either burned to death or died jumping out of windows in panic.

The fire comes as events in Ukraine appear to be spiraling out of control.  Clashes between pro-Russian and pro-Ukrainian protesters occur daily, and before the fire, four protesters died in another violent clash.  The UN met for an emergency session at Russia’s request.
