At least 157 miners are dead after an explosion at a coal mine in western Turkey. The coal mine is in Soma, about 75 miles northeast of Izmir. At least 57 miners were also injured, and hundreds are believed to be trapped. The explosion occurred 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) below the surface during a change in shifts.
Cengiz Ergun, the mayor of a local town, said at least 600 were still trapped. He confirmed the fire was triggered by an electrical fault. Rescue teams from neighboring regions have been quick to rush to the mine for assistance, and 20 miners have been rescued so far, but hundreds remain trapped.
