The 2014 FIFA World Cup has already proven to be extremely unpredictable and that trend continued as Chile, mentioned as “dark horses” for the tournament eliminated defending champions Spain in the group stages. Spain were hammered 5-1 by the Netherlands in their opening match, but were expected to bounce back against Chile.
However, Chile backed up their win against Australia with a 2-0 defeat of the Spaniards. With Netherlands defeating Australia 3-2 in a thriller, both Chile and the Netherlands move on to the Round of 16 while Australia and, shockingly, Spain head home. It is only the fifth time the defending champions have ever been eliminated so early.
