Meriam Ibrahim, the woman who was sentenced to death for converting to Christianity, has been released from a prison in Sudan. Ibrahim’s case drew international outrage and religious groups campaigned hard for her release after she was sentenced to be hanged. She has now been released from prison and is in a safe house for her safety.
Ibrahim was pregnant when she was sentenced, and gave birth only 12 days into her sentence. Sudan’s SUNA news agency released a statement saying, “the appeal court ordered the release of Meriam Ibrahim and the cancellation of the court ruling”. Religious campaign group Hardwired described it as “a happy day.”
