Two Italian aid workers who ignored their parents’ pleas not to enter Syria have been kidnapped by Islamic extremists. Greta Ramelli and Vanessa Marzullo, 20 and 21 years old, had been involved in humanitarian projects in the country for two years. The two girls, who are studying at the University of Milan, had a passion for activism.
Both girls’ parents had begged them not to go to Syria and to rather stay in Italy and set up a foundation from there. But the girls wouldn’t listen, as Salvatore Marzullo said of his daughter, “I couldn’t stop her from doing what she wanted. It’s not like you can take a person and tie them down.”
