India has called off diplomatic talks with Pakistan, ending renewed peace efforts with neighbors. Only three months ago, Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif shook hands with new Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi at his inauguration in a symbol of peace. The move gave hope that the two countries could finally find peace, but that has since fallen apart.
Pakistan had invited India to peace talks in Islamabad on August 25th. However, Syed Akbaruddin, India’s foreign ministry spokesperson, slammed the invite as “unacceptable” and that Pakistan was trying to “interfere” with Indian domestic affairs. Pakistan labeled India’s refusal as a “setback.”
