Four new breeds have been added to the American Kennel Club, bringing the total number to 184. Two Italian breeds, the Cirneco dell’Etna, also known as the “Sicilian greyhound”, and the Bergamasco, similar to a collie or sheepdog and added to the herding group, were amongst the new breeds.
The Spanish Water Dog was also added to the herding group. It has curly hair that tends to flop over its eyes, making it “sometimes herd anything that moves.” The AKC doesn’t recommend the breed for first-time dog owners. The final new breed is the South African Boerboel, a large, athletic, dominant dog that was added to the “working dogs” group.
