Countless memorial services, many taking place beachside, were held throughout Asia on the 10th anniversary of the Boxing Day Tsunami that killed about 270,000, one of the deadliest natural disasters in history.  Indonesia’s Vice President Jusuf Kalla attended one of the services, in Banda Aceh, and said, “We tearfully saw thousands of corpses, no words can describe our feelings at the time.”

In Thailand, Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha held a service at a police boat that was washed more than a mile inland by the powerful waves and has become a memorial.  Meanwhile, Si Lanka symbolically recreated a train ride that killed 2,000 in 2004 when it was hit by the tsunami.
