Smoke Engulfs L’Enfant Plaza Metro Station

One person has died and another 84 were hospitalized, including 2 in critical condition after smoke filled a train carriage and station platform on the Washington DC Metro.  More than 200 people were evacuated from L’Enfant Plaza due to the smoke.  A female passenger was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead after no pulse was found.

Passengers had to lay on the floor of a train for 40 minutes to try and escape the thick smoke.  Announcers repeatedly told them to “stay calm”.  Authorities are still trying to determine the cause of the initial fire that filled the station with smoke.
