Better Call Saul, the highly-anticipated spin-off of Breaking Bad, attracted 6.9 million viewers for its debut episode, and 4.4 million in the 18-49 demographic. According to Nielsen, this is a record for a cable TV show debut in a major demographic. Breaking Bad’s pilot episode in 2008 attracted only of fifth of those numbers.
The comedy series focuses on criminal lawyer Saul Goodman, six years before he met Walter White and Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad. Played by Bob Odenkirk, Saul proved to be so popular with Breaking Bad viewers that AMC quickly gave the green light for the spin-off.
