Medics Carry Away the Body of Boris Nemtsov

Boris Nemtsov, one of the leading opposition politicians in Russia, was shot dead by an unknown assassin.  Nemtsov, a former deputy prime minister, was walking across a bridge with a Ukrainian woman when he was shot in the back in a drive-by shooting.  The incident occurred shortly after midnight.

Nemtsov, who gained a reputation as an economic reformer as mayor of Nizhny Novgorod, was one of President Vladimir Putin’s most outspoken opponents.  He had publicly spoken earlier this month about fearing for his life.  He had been set to take part in a large anti-Putin rally the very next day.  President Putin issued a statement giving his condolences to Nemtsov’s family and condemning the assassination, saying it may have been a “contract killing.”
