A judge has ordered Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke to pay Marvin Gaye’s family $7.4 million after ruling they stole Gaye’s “Got to Give It Up” in their 2013 hit “Blurred Lines”. Gaye’s family first sued the singers later that year. Thicke testified that he didn’t write the song, saying Williams did and that “the biggest hit of my career was written by someone else and I was jealous and I wanted credit.”
Williams admitted to writing the song, in an hour, but said he wrote it on his own, independent of Gaye’s music. The ruling will likely tarnish the impressive career of the multi-Grammy Award winning artist. “Blurred Lines” was arguably the biggest hit of 2013, spending 12 weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100.
