The US Army has charged Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl with desertion and “misbehavior before the enemy”. The desertion charge could’ve possibly seen Bergdahl facing the death penalty, but the level he has been charged with carries a 5 year prison sentence maximum. However, the “misbehavior before the enemy” charge means he could be facing life in prison.
Along with the prison sentence, Bergdahl faces dishonorable discharge from the Army, his rank being reduced to “E-1”, the lowest possible, and forfeiting his military pay. The next step is an “article 32” hearing, the Army’s equivalent of a grand jury hearing in a civilian court.
