EU to Hold Emergency Summit on Mediterranean Migrants

Migrants are Desperately Fleeing Northern Africa on Unsafe Boats, Causing Large Numbers of Deaths

The European Union has announced it will hold an emergency summit to discuss the issue of migrants fleeing northern Africa for Europe.  The unsafe boats they use to cross the Mediterranean has led to over 1,750 deaths this year, with over 800 drowning off the coast of Libya on Sunday.

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi called people smugglers “the slave traders of the 21st century”.  Of the Mediterranean nations, Italy has been hit the hardest by the problem, with 90% of migrants arriving on Italian shores.  The EU has already released a 10-point action plan for preventing further deaths.
