City Workers Haul Away the “Locks of Love”
City workmen in Paris have begun breaking lovers’ padlocks on the Pont des Arts bridge after the city voted to ban all padlocks from the bridge. Despite it being a popular tourist attraction, city leaders were concerned that the weight of the more than 700,000 padlocks were a strain on the 19th century bridge.
One of the metal grilles containing the locks fell into the water last summer due to the weight. After the locks are removed, the metal grilles will be replaced by pexiglass to prevent future padlocks. A “No Love Locks” campaign on Facebook was successful in lobbying city leaders to ban the locks.
