First US Volunteer Killed Fighting Alongside Kurdish Rebels Against ISIS

Broomfield Went by the Kurdish Name Gelhat Rumet

36 year-old Keith Broomfield has been named as the first American volunteer to be killed fighting against ISIS.  Broomfield, who died a week ago, joined the YPG militia in February.  His mother said, “I didn’t want him to go, but I didn’t have a choice.”  A YPG official said Broomfield died near the border town of Kobani, Syria.

A Kurdish Facebook page, Save Kobani, posted, “You were a friend of the Kurdish people, a hero of justice and humanity.  May you rest in peace, you will forever stay alive in our hearts.”  Broomfield is believed to be the fourth Westerner to die fighting for the YPG, with the other three being from Australia, Germany, and Britain.
