Kurds Waved Flags and Applauded as Broomfield’s Casket Was Driven Past Them
Hundreds of Kurds lined the streets to give a hero’s farewell to American Keith Broomfield as his casket was driven to the Turkish border crossing, where it was handed over to his family. Broomfield became the first American to die helping the People’s Protection Units (YPG) fight ISIS. His father said he had felt “led by the Lord” to help the Kurds.
With the YPG, Broomfield fought under the nom de guerre Gelhat Rumet. His sister Jennifer posted a screenshot of her brother’s texts when he informed her of his decision to help the YPG fight ISIS. He told her, “Sometimes you got to be a man whether you want to or not. I don’t expect anyone to understand but I don’t need anyone to either.”
