Spanish Princess Cristina Loses Title

Princess Cristina Married Urdangarin, a Former Olympic Handball Player, in 1997.

Spanish Princess Cristina has lost her title of “Duchess of Palma” amid fraud charges. King Felipe VI, her brother, officially removed the title from her.  Cristina’s lawyer said she asked her brother to remove the title, but the royal palace said the decision had already been made before her request.

Princess Cristina is set to go on trial for tax evasion.  Her husband, Inaki Urdangarin, is accused of embezzling $16 million from a charitable sports institution he ran called the Noos Institute, and Princess Cristina is accused of involvement in the scam.  It is the first time in Spain’s modern history that a member of royalty has lost their title.
