Supreme Court Sides With Obama on Key Healthcare Decision

President Obama Celebrates With Chief of Staff Dennis McDonough After the Ruling

The Supreme Court voted 6-3 that the Affordable Care Act, “Obamacare”  authorizes subsidy payments to Americans, regardless of where their plans are purchased.  The ruling was closely followed and President Obama was triumphant afterwards, declaring “the Affordable Care Act is here to stay” and promising that he wouldn’t “unravel what has been woven into the fabric of America.”

In his dissenting opinion, Justice Anton Scalia wrote, “we should start calling this law SCOTUScare”, referring to all the help President Obama has received from the Supreme Court.  Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the majority opinion that “Congress passed the Affordable Care Act to improve health insurance markets, not destroy them.  If at all possible, we must interpret the Act in a way that is consistent with the former, and avoids the latter.”
