Scientists Explain “Extraordinary” Shark Attacks in North Carolina

The Six Shark Attacks That Have Occurred in the Last Two Weeks in North Carolina.

Six shark attacks have been recorded in North Carolina in the past two weeks, more than the state has ever seen in an entire year in recorded history.  Two teenagers lost arms in the attacks while an 8 year-old boy suffered serious injuries to his legs.  The most recent was an 18 year-old who is in serious condition after being bitten in his right leg.

Scientists say the incredible spike in attacks is due to an “unholy mix” of increased beach visitors and bait fish moving closer to shore.  Small bait fish, as well as sea turtles, are moving closer to shore recently and attracting sharks.  This time of year is also particularly bad because it is when sharks come closer to shore to spawn.
