The US Celebrate After Going Up 2-0

The United States defeated fellow two-time champions Germany 2-0 to reach the final of the Women’s World Cup.  The US dominated the first half, but failed to finish any of their chances.  Germany improved in the second half and looked likely to go ahead after Julie Johnston pulled down Celia Sasic in the box.  But Sasic missed the penalty, the first the German women’s team has ever missed at a World Cup.

Minutes later, the US earned a penalty, even though replays showed the foul actually occurred outside the box.  Carli Lloyd, the US captain, stepped up to score the penalty, her third goal in three matches.  Substitute Kelly O’Hara scored after a great assist from Lloyd to seal the win.  The US will now take on defending champions Japan or England in the final.
