Hamilton on the $10 Bill is Based on John Trumbull’s 1805 Portrait
Treasure Secretary Jacob Lew insists he will go ahead with his plan to replace Alexander Hamilton on the $10 bill with a historically significant woman. Which woman will earn a spot on the bill is to be decided by a public vote and will be announced by the end of the summer. A woman hasn’t been featured on US currency in over 100 years, when Martha Washington lost her place on a dollar silver certificate in 1896.
However, the decision has seen widespread backlash, particularly Hamilton losing his place on the $10 bill. Former Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke wrote in a blog post that he plans “appalled” him because Hamilton was “without a doubt the best and most farsighted economic policymaker in US history.” Critics have called for Andrew Jackson to lose his place on the $20 bill instead, considering his horrific treatment of Native Americans.
