In the wake of the violent Baltimore riots after the death of Freddie King, the city’s murder rate has climbed to the highest in 43 years. 43 people were killed in July, the most in a single month since August, 1942, when 45 people were killed. In 2015 so far, there have been 183 homicides and 366 non-fatal shootings. This time last year, there had been 119 homicides and 200 non-fatal shootings.
Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake fired Police Commissioner Anthony Batts on July 8th. “Too many continue to die on our streets. Families are tired of dealing with this pain, and so am I.” But the Interim Commissioner, Kevin Davis, has been powerless to slow down the spike in killings.
