Holmes Maintains the Shooting Was a Moment of Madness Triggered by Mental Illness

James Holmes has avoided the death penalty after jurors couldn’t reach a unanimous decision on whether or not he should be killed.  He has now automatically been sentenced to life in prison with no parole.  Holmes killed 12 people and injured 70 in a shooting attack in a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado in July 2012.

The jury had already previously his plea of insanity, but failed to reach a decision on whether Holmes should be killed with lethal injection.  Relatives of Holmes, including his mother, burst into tears after the verdict was read.  His mother had repeatedly pleaded for her son’s life to be spared.
