Former President Jimmy Carter, 90 years old, has announced that he has been diagnosed with lung cancer, and that the cancer has spread to “other parts of his body”. Carter had been cutting short his overseas trips recently due to health issues, and in May he flew home early from Guyana after complaining that he felt ill. Carter served as America’s 39th president, from 1977 to 1981.
Politicians were quick to offer their support to the former president. President Obama released a statement saying, “Jimmy, you’re as resilient as the come, and along with the rest of America, we are rooting for you.” Vice President Biden tweeted, “spoke with President Jimmy Carter tonight. A great man, always upbeat and optimistic. We’re praying for him.”
