Dow Jones Tumbles in Roller Coaster Day

The Floor of the New York Stock Exchange as the Dow Initially Plunged 1,000 Points

The Dow Jones endured a roller coaster day as it plunged 1,000 points after opening, sending shockwaves across the financial world, but then rebounded to down 325 by lunch, before falling again to end on 588 points down.  It has never lost more than 800 points in a day, a record which looked in serious danger today.

The cause of the tumble was China’s ‘Black Monday”, in which the Shanghai Index fell by 8%, losing all the gains for the previous year.  It was China’s worst day in trading since 2007, and follows serious losses last week as the world’s second largest economy continues to collapse.
