Horror movie director Wes Craven has died aged 76 after battling brain cancer. His family released a statement saying, “it is with great sadness we inform you that Wes Craven passed away at 1PM on Sunday, Aug 30 after battling brain cancer. Craven was surrounded by love, in the presence of his family, at his home in Los Angeles.”
Craven made his debut in 1972 with The Last House on the Left. Craven wrote, directed, and edited the film for less than $100,000 and went on to make over $3 million. He became famous internationally in 1984 after directing the first Nightmare on Elm Street movie, which made Freddy Krueger an icon of horror. Craven’s other films included The Hills Have Eyes and the Scream series.
