107 people were killed and 238 were injured yesterday after high winds caused a crane to collapse onto Meca’s Grand Mosque, the largest mosque in the world. A violent thunderstorm in the area generated the high winds which caused the crane to collapse. Authorities have been blamed for being negligent in allowing cranes to tower over the mosque.
Today the clean-up process begun as Meca prepares for the hajj, beginning September 21. The pilgrimage brought over 2 million people to the city last year. Visitors calmly walked past the collapsed crane today as the mosque appeared to be the picture of serenity after yesterday’s chaos.
