Russian has begun airstrikes on three provinces of Syria, all of which are controlled by rebels fighting the Bashar al-Assad government. The US-led coalition in Syria has backed those rebels, one group of which was given US missiles. 36 civilians were killed in the airstrikes.
Secretary of State John Kerry said “de-confliction” talks would be held “as soon as possible” as the relationship between the US and Russia continues to strain. Russia only gave the US hours of notice before the airstrikes.
