Russia has launched a dozen airstrikes against the insurgent-held area of Turkey near the Syrian border, where a Russian jet was shot down yesterday. Rebel forces reportedly shot and killed one of the pilots and chanted “Allahu Akbar” over his dead body. The pilot who was killed, Lieutenant Colonel Oleg Peshkov, will now posthumously receive Russia’s highest state honor.
President Vladimir Putin confirmed that the other pilot, Captain Konstantin Murahtin, who was initially thought to have always been killed, was rescued after a 12-hours. A joint operation with Syrian government forces managed to rescue Captain Murahtin, and he has now been taken to a Russian air base.
