Freak weather in the southern US has claimed the lives of at least 42 people over the weekend with flooding, tornadoes, and extreme thunderstorms causing severe damage. 11 people were killed in Texas by an outbreak of tornadoes in the Dallas area. All travel in the Texas panhandle has been strongly discouraged due to blowing and swirling snow.
Outside of Texas, 10 people were killed in Mississippi, 7 in Missouri, 6 in Tennessee, 5 in Illinois, 2 in Alabama, and 1 in Arkansas. 20 motorists have been left stranded by 10-foot high snow drifts on the highway in Parmer County, near the Texas-New Mexico border.
