Scientists were surprised to discover a common new virus while analyzing intestinal samples. The CrAssphage virus is believed to be inside about half of all people. While discovering a new virus inside the human gut actually isn’t all that rare, discovering one so common certainly is. The lead author of the report said, “the fact that it has flown under the radar for so long is strange.”
It is believed that the newly found virus could influence some of the most common bacteria in the human gut. They are now trying to grow the virus in a laboratory and better understand how if affects humans. The next step would be to try and find a way to use the virus against harmful bacteria.
