After being arrested yesterday, drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman has been returned to the same prison he escaped from 6 months ago.  The jail in Altiplano was considered to be the most secure in Mexico until his escape.  Mexican authorities have confirmed that El Chapo will be extradited to the US to face drug trafficking charges there.

This is a complete reversal, since Mexico had refused the US’s request in June, before El Chapo’s escape.  The legal process is likely to be lengthy and El Chapo’s attorney has already said he will fight it every step of the way.  If El Chapo is extradited, he will likely face life in prison with no chance of parole.

“El Chapo”, After Being Arrested

Six months after his incredible escape from prison through a tunnel, Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Loera has been arrested.  Authorities were finally able to apprehend El Chapo after an early morning raid on a motel.  Five gangsters were killed in a shootout, and including El Chapo, six were arrested.  A Marine sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

“El Cholo”, the right side man to El Chapo, was also arrested in the raid.  Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto wrote on Twitter, “Mission accomplished.  We have him.”  It is unclear whether El Chapo will be extradited to the United States, where he faces multiple drug trafficking charges.
