The Raid Freed Over 20 Iraqi Hostages

A US soldier has been killed in a raid in northern Iraq in which 70 Iraqis held hostage by ISIS were freed. Additionally, 6 ISIS militants were arrested and at least 20 were killed.  The solider killed was the first casualty in the US’s ground fight against ISIS and the first US soldier to be killed in Iraq since troops were pulled out in 2011.

Members of Iraq’s security forces were among the hostages freed.  A high-ranking military official said, “people were chained to walls.  A mass atrocity was averted.”  Four Kurdish soldiers were also wounded in the raid.
